Thinking about the people with diabetes — Sokołów culinary workshops
Proper diet is one of key elements in the treatment and prevention of diabetes. A series of workshops was devoted to this issue. Their participants had the opportunity to learn the most important information about the disease, try the exercises recommended for diabetics, and to prepare a meal based on the recommendations for diabetics together.
The Sokołów is committed to creating and promoting dietary trends and a healthy lifestyle. Much attention is devoted towards persons with special dietary requirements — including those suffering from diabetes.
The workshop participants were culinary bloggers (including those, who are directly affected by the disease) and the editors of the cultural-culinary magazine “Kukbuk”. Sokołów nutrition expert, dietician Agnieszka Piskała, has presented the most important facts about diabetes and information on how the diet for the diabetic patients should be formulated.
Diabetes has become a serious social problem — it is estimated that approx. 2.7 million Polish people suffer from the disease and the number is constantly growing. The proper diabetic diet is based on regular mealtimes and their frequency — in most cases it should be 5 meals a day (sometimes even 6). A very important role is played by supper and the, so called, “second supper”, that influence maintaining of a constant level of sugar during the night sleep. The diet should be based on carbohydrates and meat and meat products are its important components. They not only have a low glycaemic index, but also reduce the glycaemic index of groats-, pasta- and vegetable-based foods. They are also an important source of protein, vitamins and minerals.
Physical activity also plays a huge role in the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Another point of the workshop was presentation of the exercises recommended for diabetics, conducted by coach Adam Besztak. Participants were invited to do some resistance exercises, a short Nordic walking training and breathing exercises.
The exercises were followed by cooking session led by Dominik Moskalenko. Representatives of the "Kukbuk” magazine and bloggers prepared a beef tartar and beef Stroganoff. The workshop concluded with a meal, during which the participants talked about a healthy, balanced and life-quality-improving diet.
